During the second Dutch lockdown period Maartje explored the atmosphere of this new reality in which people are being relatively thrown back on themselves and their immediate environment. Within a 1 km radius of her home, she captured the silent streets and the “alasness” of these unprecedented times. From a deep-seated need for positivity and reassurance, she tried to find light and thus comfort in the dark, resulting in poetic pictures in which light -as well as the absence of it- plays an important role.
